Quality legal assistance can be expensive, and it can be hard to know where to turn for an attorney you can trust. The MetLife Legal Plan provides access to a team of over 18,500 attorneys ready to help you take care of life’s planned–and unplanned–legal events.

The MetLife Legal Plan provides telephone advice, office consultations, and in-court representation for covered legal matters that include the following and more:

  • Financial matters. Debt defense, creditor negotiations, identity theft, personal bankruptcy, and tax audit representation.
  • Home and real estate. Sale or purchase of a home, mortgages, refinancing, home equity loans, security deposit assistance, and property tax assessments.
  • Estate planning. Wills, healthcare proxies, living wills, powers of attorney, and trusts.
  • Family and personal. Adoption, guardianship, juvenile court defense, personal property protection, and school hearings.
  • Civil lawsuits. Civil litigation defense, pet liabilities, and small claims assistance.
  • Elder-care issues. Deeds, leases, nursing home agreements, Medicare and Medicaid.
  • Traffic matters. Defense of traffic tickets,* driving privileges restoration, and possession.

How does it work?

Once you’re enrolled, it’s easy to access an attorney:

  1. Create your account. Call 800-821-6400 or visit legalplans.com to create an account. From there you can find a network attorney and obtain a case number. A service team is available to help match you with experienced legal counsel.
  2. Schedule an appointment. Call the network attorney to schedule an appointment at a time that’s convenient for you.

Must I use a network attorney?

You have the option to select an out-of-network attorney and receive a fee reimbursement up to a set dollar amount. To receive reimbursement, you must submit a fee reimbursement packet and your attorney’s bill to MetLife.

Are there online resources?

The MetLife Legal Plan includes a digital estate planning solution for the creation of wills, advance directives or durable financial powers of attorney online, on your own time.

How much does it cost?

For a monthly fee of $21.00, you’ll have unlimited access to attorneys for all legal matters covered under the plan. No deductible. No co-pay. No max.

Who can be covered?

Your monthly enrollment covers unlimited legal assistance for you, your spouse or domestic partner, and your dependents.

When can it start?

You may begin to use services as soon as the next business day after you enroll.

Are there any exclusions?

Certain business and employment matters, patent, trademark, and copyright matters, costs or fines, appeals and class actions, and unethical matters are excluded.2

Today, they are the country’s largest provider of legal benefits with a vast attorney network of over 18,000 attorneys, an award-winning customer service team, and digital solutions for legal needs.

1,3 Legal plans are administered by MetLife Legal Plans, Inc., Cleveland, Ohio. In California, this entity operates under the name MetLife Legal Insurance Services. In certain states, group legal plans are provided through insurance coverage underwritten by Metropolitan General Insurance Company, Warwick, RI.  Some services not available in all states. No service, including consultations, will be provided for: 1) employment-related matters, including company or statutory benefits; 2) matters involving the employer, MetLife and affiliates and plan attorneys; 3) matters in which there is a conflict of interest between the employee and spouse or dependents in which case services are excluded for the spouse and dependents; 4) appeals and class actions; 5) farm and business matters, including rental issues when the participant is the landlord; 6) patent, trademark and copyright matters; 7) costs and fines; 8) frivolous or unethical matters; or 9) matters for which an attorney client relationship exists prior to the participant becoming eligible for plan benefits. Coverage for defense of criminal matters is excluded from insurance coverage for individuals located in New York. For all other personal legal matters, an advice and consultation benefit is provided.
